Fern tapped a finger idly against his chin, contemplating the question,
"Wellllll, if you find someone who you think is compatible with your interests, and you think you would be good as friends, then I think it is acceptable to request it of them. Answering 'yes' to such a question would be like saying 'Yes, I am making a commitment to keep in touch and have conversations." Or.... something like that. I don't know, it just seems we could be friends. Living such drear lives as we do live."

"Well...okay then....if that's how it should work..." he paused, thinking about his father. He cringed, anticipating ill things the come and he almost took a sip of the near boiling liquid. "Uhm...there's not anything bad about you on record...is there?" he questioned meekly and then felt the need to defend himself.
"It's not that....I care but my dad...if I told him I had a friend he'd probably do a background check...to make sure you weren't a threat..."

Fern tensed, looking at the boy with an odd expression on his face.
"Bad...? ...No.... nothing bad per say. I'm not a disgusting cyborg or anything. Just a regular human trying to make a living in this world. ...Why would your dad worry about threats?"

"Uhm..." Sacha said, fidgeting in his seat uncomfortably. "My dad's the Mayor..." He took in a deep breath, having gotten that in the open. "I mean...I don't have anything against cyborgs, I've never met one so I don't think I should judge but...my dad's...well...I think it's pretty clear where he stands on issues."
He finally took a sip of the tea and it came close to scalding the tip of his tongue, he lowered it back down to the table. "There have been threats on my life since he became the Mayor and made his intentions clear...you know..."

Fern shrugged, although inwardly he was feeling a bit nervous. He waved off what Sacha said,
"Eh, Mayor, no big deal. I mean, he hates cyborgs, but don't we all? Useless fools, parading around as humans..." He cringed, "Really, I.. well... he has a point in what he says. Yes..."
He smiled sadly at Sacha, feeling sorry for the kid.
"So I guess that's where your shitty life comes from. I would hate the Mayor's son too if I were in highschool. What a life you've been born into...."

Sacha nodded his head. He didn't agree with the cyborg thing. He had never met a cyborg...and even though people said they weren't human...he was a little confused with what the definition of a human was. But he didn't like the confrontation of an argument, friends weren't supposed to argue...right?
"My dad was a lawyer first...but he became the Mayor a few years back," Sacha said with a melancholy sigh. "Lots of the kids at school think I must be a stuck up snob because he's the Mayor but...they know I'm not now and they still don't like me..."

Fern nodded, glad to be off the topic of cyborgs. It pained him to spout negative things about them when really he wanted to denounce the Mayor and his foolish ideas.
"Kids will be kids... They will envy anyone who seems to be more important than them. Out of their frustration and if they can get away with it, they will constantly put down said 'more important' person, to make themselves feel above them. You just happen to be a victim of this mindset... a pity. You seem like a really nice kid."

"Thanks..." Sacha said, his lips twitching as he tried to smile a little. The other was saying nice things...even though they had just met. Another friend thing, he supposed. "I don't think I'm that great...I'm kinda normal, average. I'm not really bad or really good...just kind there..."
He picked up his cup and sipped on the contents, disguising the smile. "This tea..." he mumbled, "It's really good...I've never had tea before..."

Fern smiled warmly at him, deciding that he really like this cute boy.
"No, you're really good. You're so modest. People can see you don't have much confidence but you deserve to have more and have smart things to say. It's nice. But.... how could you never have had tea before??? What, did your parents neglect you? Tea is the staple beverage of the world!"

"My dad says it's one of those things best saved for adulthood...caffeine..." Sacha said, lowering the cup a little. "I don't drink coffee, tea or soda with caffeine in it..." He had the Diet-Non-Caffeinated sodas that his father filled the house with. Only his dad had coffee and things like that...and his mother was the last person he had known to drink tea.
"My dad's kinda strict," he said with a sheepish smile, "He wants to keep me safe and if I'm wired on caffeine...I might get into trouble."

Fern leaned back in his chair, folding his arms over his chest.
"That's a pretty strict dad you have there. To even ban caffeine? You won't be jumping off the walls with just a cup. It gives you a little lift. For me, it gives me strength. I really need the extra caffeine... I naturally have low blood pressure so I feel fatigued more often than the regular person... it's nothing serious. But... in all honesty, I think your dad's a little crazy with that rule. You're a teenager! You should get a little caffeine in your blood."
He held a hand passionately to his heart,
"Of course, there is also a wide variety of decaffeinated tea. Still tastes as delicious, still such a wonderful experience, but without the little energy boost. You should stock up on it."

"Decaffeinated tea?" Sacha questioned, "Does it taste like this?" He pointed towards the small mouthful of tea left in his cup. He had no idea tea tasted like this...sweet and delicious. It went down so easily and it tasted a little bit like honey. Did tea come with honey already in it?
"My dad has lots of limits, I should have actually been home by now..." he admitted, "He also limits my sugar intake, time on the computer and I didn't own video games until I was thirteen. I used to just read books...which was fun...it still is fun actually. Especially the old books from the 20th century...they're pretty good if you can get a nice, readable copy."

Fern covered his mouth with a hand to stifle a laugh.
"Yes, you can make it taste like that. Your tea has added honey and lemon in it. I didn't think you would enjoy plain green tea as much, it's sort of an acquired taste. Not sweet enough for a kid like you. But yes, it can be exactly as your tea right now, just without the caffeine."
He frowned, thinking that Sacha must have a rather frustrating life.
"It's unfair that you must suffer such limits at your home and then face such cruel children at your school. I know there is very little to be done with such limits, but your dad should loosen up a bit. He sounds very stifling, but then again, he is the Mayor. At least you can find solace in books. I tend to read books on flora and fauna, as well as animal behavior and ancient civilizations. I'm not such a fiction person, although I do recommend it."

"I read fiction," Sacha said, draining the cup and lowering it back down. "Not fantasy or anything but...fiction. Like books about high school kids from the past...stuff like that. Times when people were skeptical of each other and didn't accept different races. It's really cool...reading about those times."
"And I guess home is what you're used to...I don't think I could tolerate being free...I don't know what I'll do when I move out of my house...it seems like a really scary future to deal with..."

Fern nodded,
"It's really interesting to see how people used to live. All the intolerance..."
He shrugged,
"You think it is so scary to leave home, but when you are made to leave it, things aren't so bad. I left my family a year ago, my own decision. I wanted new horizons. It's been tough, but, it's not the world that's scary, it's other people. You just have to learn to recognize what is good and what is bad and all the gray in between. Even a bad decision with what seems like dire consequences... it can have some good in it. You're going to graduate highschool soon, right? What are you planning to do?"
